New Year's Resolutions From Parents
- Independent Play"We have resolved that we're going to try and help our daughter learn to play independently on a more frequent basis. She has lots of attention from us and her babysitter and has tended not to play much by herself. Now that she's two, we decided that she should be able to play at least for a short while by herself--or we don't get much of a break! My wife's idea has been to reward her with a sticker when she plays by herself, which she generally does by paging through a big stack of books and narrating some of the pages out loud. So far, it's working!"
- Unhurried Time"When things were quieter during the holidays, I had a chance to go home a little early from work. My daughter and I had time to leave child care, have dinner, and play without feeling so rushed. I would like to create more time like that with her in the evening."
- Playing with Peers"I will try to create opportunities during some weekends for my child to play with other children his age. This is good for his growth and development. It is also a good opportunity for me as a parent of an only child to see who he is with other children."
- Taking Care of Yourself"I need to recognize how the relationship with my spouse builds the foundation for my family and put the time and energy into that relationship so that my children experience the emotional security, intimacy, and love that results from a strong partnership with my spouse."
- One-on-One Time"I want to make special one-on-one time for both my baby and my toddler, so that they get my undivided attention during those times. And my spouse is going to do this, too--so that each child gets that special time from both mom and dad."
- Grandparents' Time"As a prospective grandparent, I am resolved to connect with my grandchild, long distance. I have gotten some very good ideas from others, such as recording audiotapes with my voice reading bedtime stories, or singing lullabies and sending them to the baby. And perhaps one night a week could be set aside for grandma's time during bedtime. I also plan to keep albums of my visits with the baby."
- Parent Worry"To worry less about doing everything exactly right and to focus more on just enjoying my baby and getting to know him!"
- Patience"As a dad, I am resolving to be more patient with my son of 2 years old."
- Safe Places to Play"I made a resolution to make my home safer for my children."
- Enjoy Each Moment"My resolution is "to enjoy my children" who are 10-year-old and 0-year-old daughters. At my age, it seems I can enjoy my baby more. As a mother, I want to live day by day in the present without regrets in the past or worries for the future."

Did You Know?
The tradition of using a baby to signify the new year was begun in Greece around 600 BC. It was their tradition at that time to celebrate their god of wine, Dionysus, by parading a baby in a basket, representing the annual rebirth of that god as the spirit of fertility. Early Egyptians also used a baby as a symbol of rebirth. |
